Enhanced support for innovative small businesses

Enhanced support for innovative small businesses

Publicerat 10 October, 2023

Lignin For Future is a three-year project that commenced in January 2023. The objective is to enhance the prospects available to creative small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in the bioeconomy to grow and implement their ideas, preferably related to the raw material lignin.

LignoCity’s existing offerings are expanding thanks to an investment in a biomass dryer, primarily for lignin, at the testing facility in Bäckhammar, Sweden. The investment is expected to enable several SME’s and innovative startup companies to develop offerings that contribute to climate change mitigation through research and innovation efforts connected to the new equipment.

Enhanced regional collaboration support for startups

Simultaneously, within the project, regional collaboration is being developed in the innovation support system linked to LignoCity.

“The overarching goal of the project is to attract more innovative startup companies to the region,” says Katarina Ohlsson, Project Manager for Lignin for Future at RISE. “Through collaborations involving multiple parties, we can contribute to strengthening these companies’ expertise, entrepreneurship, and ability to drive the climate transition.”.

Support from idea to production

Through the Lignin For Future project, LignoCity becomes a center benefiting the development of the region. Dried lignin is a prerequisite for various products such as bioplastics, asphalt bitumen, sealants, energy storage materials and more.

LignoCity is currently the only facility in the world offering an open, flexible infrastructure capable of producing customized sulfate lignin grades in sufficiently large quantities (approximately 1 ton/hour) for scaling various refining possibilities. We offer support throughout the entire journey, from initial curiosity about lignin to the establishment of a company and production. LignoCity can supply raw materials during the company’s initial development phase and up to commercial production.
