Instead of using graphite, the Swedish start up Bright Day Graphene makes “green” graphene from the forest raw material lignin. Through an EU grant for women innovators and founders, the startup company has been granted 75 000 euro for their pioneering method.

Graphene is often described as a super material. It is lighter than cotton but stronger than steel, it also has electrically conductive properties.

Large-scale production of graphene is difficult to achieve, which has slowed down the use of the material. The most common way to fabricate graphene is to use graphite that is mined in mines. Bright Day Graphene has taken a different approach and have developed a method that makes it possible to make graphene using lignin.

Female tech entrepreneurs

It was recently made clear that Bright Day Graphene is one of three Swedish companies to receive 75,000 euros via the new Women Tech EU initiative for their pioneering sustainable innovations.

– We are incredibly happy to be noticed for what we do and to be part of this network of women tech entrepreneurs in Europe. The money will go to start a project where we will refine our business model and develop both a pricing strategy and an IP strategy, something we are very much looking forward to, says Malin Alpsten, CEO of Bright Day Graphene in an interview with SIO Grafen.
