The old boiler house gets new life – new plant will reduce lignin odour

Publicerat 10 June, 2025

A brand-new pilot plant is now being installed at LignoCity in Bäckhammar – with one clear goal: to reduce the odour of lignin. The old boiler house is being brought back to life and adapted to house new technology that will make lignin more usable in a wider range of products.

Smell has long been a barrier for many lignin applications. This new plant will make it possible to produce lignin with significantly improved odour – opening the door to new markets and uses.

– This plant creates new opportunities and value chains for lignin. One example is bioplastics, where odour has been a showstopper, says Katarina Olsson, Project Manager at RISE.

The installation is in its final phase. Electrical and control systems are in place, and the equipment is ready to run. The goal is to have the plant up and running during autumn 2025.

LignoCity is part of the technical infrastructure at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden and serves as a test and development environment for new lignin-based solutions.
