The process of making vanillin from lignin

Vanillin is most used aroma in the world. The production is mainly based on petrochemical feedstock and associated with the production of toxic waste. But here are more environmentally friendly alternatives such as renewable lignin.

Natural vanillin cannot meet the rising demand created by the wide range of applications. The market is therefore filled with chemically produced vanillin which generates toxic by-products and waste.

By using the biomass lignin, a biproduct of the pulp industry, it is possible to create “natural” vanillin. The process of doing so is described in a scientific article by Manuel Breiner, Jana Strugatchi and Siegfried R. Waldvogel from the Department Chemie, Universität Mainz, Deutschland.
